STUDY SPANISH IN GRANADA, ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING CITIES IN ANDALUSIA, SOUTHERN SPAIN

The city

Granada, the birthplace of the poet Federico García Lorca, is without doubt one of the most fascinating cities in southern Spain . It is also an important university town with almost 300,000 inhabitants and more than 60,000 students.

With its world-famous Alhambra, rich culture and lively nightlife, it is the ideal place for both studying and taking a holiday: enjoy a weekend on the Mediterranean coast; participate in winter sports, horse-riding or trekking in the Sierra Nevada; take a trip to the marvellous villages of the Alpujarra mountains; watch gypsy flamenco in Sacromonte and dance salsa and tango in one of Granada's many exciting bars; visit the Arabic baths or stroll through the narrow streets of the old Moorish quarter of the Albaicín. These are just a few of the many possibilities.
At the end of the day, enjoy red wine with a tapa in one of the small squares with a view of the Alhambra and the beautiful snow-covered mountains of Sierra Nevada .



The school

The school has offered Spanish as a foreign language since 1986 and is accredited by the Spanish Instituto Cervantes and a D.E.L.E. Examination Center. The Spanish courses are held throughout the year. The friendly atmosphere and personal touch in the Spanish classes and the Andalusian charm of Granada will make your stay an unforgettable experience.

The school building with its Andalusian style, its friendly classrooms, and its beautiful courtyard retains much charm and intimacy of a family home. It is situated in a quiet location just ten minutes away from the city centre. The school is a medium-sized Spanish language school with about 600 students per year. The school is very well equipped with the latest technology and teaching material. There is a library, a video library and a virtual Spanish classroom.




The classes

All the classes are conducted entirely in Spanish and are divided into 2 distinct blocks. The first deals with the language itself, grammar structures and communicative functions; the second part deals with specific cultural themes in order to integrate all abilities and skills. This means that beginners will learn Spanish for everyday situations, whereas, in the more advanced courses, students become involved in selecting topics for discussion.

Students may choose Spanish classes from a variety of different Spanish courses. A Standard Spanish course of 4 lessons per day allows them to complement holidays with language study. An Intensive or Superintensive Spanish course of 5-6 lessons per day guarantees maximum progress for a short period of time. Students can combine 4 group lessons per day with private instruction, in a Standard-Plus Spanish course. There are also special courses: business Spanish, cultural course, training courses for teachers, D.E.L.E. exams, writing workshop and work experience programs.

Spanish classes are restricted to a maximum of 8 students per level group and are held from Monday to Friday between 09.00 and 18.30 h. There are 4, 5 or 6 lessons per day, each lasting 45 minutes. The schools offers the following 6 course levels which correspond to the ones of the new «European Framework for Language Learning, Teaching and Evaluation»: beginners, elementary, intermediate I, intermediate II, advanced and proficiency.




The accommodation

All of the private accommodation offered to students is selected carefully by the school and is within walking distance. The school offers the following options in Granada city centre:

Private Accommodation - Category I
Single and double rooms in shared flats with Spanish residents; normally young couples or people living alone. This option is good for students who book a long-term course and who already have a good knowledge of Spanish.

Private Accommodation - Category II
These are shared flats with other students from the school. The flats have 2 or more single and double rooms. This option allows students to live in an international environment.

Host family
This option is good for younger students or those who do not wish to cook for themselves. Accommodation includes breakfast and half or full board. Students have their meals with the family, and this offers an ideal and enjoyable opportunity to experience and practice the Spanish language.

Student Residence
The Student Residence with single and double rooms is located in the heart of the city. Accommodation includes breakfast and half or full board. This option allows students to live in an environment with both international and Spanish students. Availability is limited during university teaching periods from October to June.

Different categories of hostels, hotels or self- catering apartments are also avilable!




Social and cultural activities

In the afternoons and evenings the school offers a variety of regular activities including the following:

• Conferences concerning present-day topics of interest, Moorish culture and the poet Federico García Lorca.
• Film sessions dedicated to particular Spanish directors.
• Visits to the Arabic bath Aljibe de San Miguel, theatre and Flamenco concerts.
• Guided tours to the Alhambra or the old Moorish quarter of the Albaicín.
• Trips to villages in the surrounding area or to the beach.
• Trekking and horse-riding in the Sierra Nevada.
• Practical cooking courses about Mediterranean cuisine.
• Flamenco dance courses.

Travel programme
Every weekend the school offers interesting travel options of between one or several days in Andalusia, including tours to Seville, Córdoba, Ronda, the Alpujarras and different natural parks. For those who wish, there is also a 3 day trip to Morocco.
