STUDY FRENCH NEXT TO THE SEA IN NICE, ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA

The city

Nice is world renown as a university city, cultural metropolis and international holiday resort. Its mild climate and unique geographical location between the Maritime Alps and the Mediterranean Sea make it as attractive in winter as in summer. It is one of the centres of the touristic region of the Riviera, near Italy, in the lower Alps, to the East of Varo River. It is the fifth most populated city in France.

Nice International Airport, Nice-Côte d'Azur, is 7 km from the centre of the town and, after Paris, is the second busiest in France. There is a regular bus service from the airport to the centre of Nice, the SNCF Railway Station, the different towns along the French Riviera.
The city has a rich architecture and cultural heritage, and you can walk in the narrow streets of the old town and the seaside walk, visit the museums and galleries or have a rest in its beautiful parks and gardens.

The school

The school building was built at the end of the XIX century and it is located in the heart of Nice, in a pleasant area with many cafes, restaurants, shops and boutiques. The beach and the famous Promenade des Anglais are only a two minute walk away. Near the school there is a book store, a newsagent, a tobacco shop (where you can buy bus tickets and phone cards), a bank and a supermarket.

The school is on the first floor of the building and has a reception, a waiting room, coffee and cold drink machines, 10 rooms, 6 classrooms, a teacher room, a library and a video-audio room. The student has free access to internet as well. The school rent some classrooms near the main building in the summer. The last teaching methods are used in a relax and friendly environment.

The classes

All teachers are native University graduates and have post-graduate qualifications and experience in teaching French as a foreign language. Most also have other areas of expertise (literature, art, history, etc). In addition to their academic credentials, teachers are selected for their ability to stimulate students to learn French.
The latest direct teaching methods are applied in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, always orientated to improve the communication skills. Students develop their oral fluency, converting passive knowledge into active and confident command through a variety of exercises. Advanced students practice their French in discussions and debates.

Placement in the different courses is based on a personal interview and a written test. There are four levels: beginners, elementary, intermediate and advanced, every one with normal and upper version.
The types of courses offered are: standard (20 hours per week), half-intensive (25 hours per week), intensive (30 hours per week), junior (16-20 years old), private classes (from 4 to 10 daily lessons) and combination courses (20 classes per week + 1 or 2 daily private lessons). There are also classes for the preparation of the exam DELF.

The accommodation

Living with a French family is the first step towards becoming better acquainted with the country, its people and its language. All homes are carefully inspected and selected so the students will be made comfortable and welcome. Actilangue provides comfortable homes in safe, middle to upper class neighbourhoods that are located 5 to 20 minutes either walking distance or by bus from the institute.

You also have the possibility to choose other kind of accommodation: shared villa-apartment (garden, terraces and 2 twin rooms), shared flat (2 single rooms and 1 twin room), residence (each flat has kitchen, bathroom and internet), apart'hotel (the same than the residence) and hotel (3-4 stars). These accommodation are usually very central and few minutes walk or by public transport from the school.

Social and cultural activities

School is not the only place to learn French! If you like to go to the theatre or to concerts, if you are a folklore fan or jazz fan, prefer watching international sports events or like to go to discotheques or listen to live music in pubs, if you like to dine well, practice sports or just want to bathe and stroll, Nice offers almost infinite possibilities in leisure time activities.

Nice is the ideal starting point for excursions into the region. The school organizes full and half day excursions . The students are taken by bus to visit the Principality of Monaco, Grasse, Cannes, St.-Paul-de-Vence, St.-Tropez, Port-Grimaud, etc. Social activities are arranged and they offer the opportunity to make friends with others from the school, to get to know the teachers outside the classroom and to learn about recreational and cultural facilities available in Nice.

Actilangue makes also arrangements for students to participate in group sport outings such as: gorge run (canyoning), biking, hiking, walking, diving etc. Students are able to make arrangements for sports such tennis, swimming, sailing, wind-surfing , etc.
Diving and windsurfing are included in the Junior Programme but they are offered to other students as well. These activities are organized with the Centre International de Plongée de Nice and the Ecole de voile de Cros de Cagne, and they are taught by teachers with sport qualifications.
