VOLUNTARY WORK IN CANADA

Canada is the second biggest country in the world and it is divided into 10 provinces that extend from east to west. It is a modern country with one of the best quality of life according to the United Nations. There are cosmopolitan and multicultural cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Furthermore it has some of the most beautiful places in the world (rainforests, deserts, mountains, canyons, islands...) and it is easy to see many species of wildlife.

We offer you links to organizations that have volunteer programs in the following areas:

- Nature reserves: You can volunteer in national parks (Parks Canada) and other reserves like: Ontario Nature, Conservation Volunteers, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.

- Birds monitoring: There are opportunities in different places of Canada. Visit the following links: Environment Canada (Birders), Duck Unlimited Canada, Reifel Bird Sanctuary (Ladner, BC), Swan Lake (Victoria, BC) and other migratory birds sanctuaries.

- Birds banding: You can volunteer in several banding stations accross Canada in spring and autumn. To visit the website of all the stations: Bird Studies Canada. We recommend the following ones: Bruce Peninsula , Long Point, Thunder Cape, Lesser Slave Lake, McKenzie and Rocky Point.

- Wildlife Rescue Centres: If you are a biology or veterinary student or you are interested in learning about wildlife care in rehabilitation, you can volunteer or do an internship in one of the following centres in Canada:
● In Toronto: Toronto Wildlife Centre gives care to birds and mammals.
● Close to Vancouver: O.W.L. (in Delta) is only for raptors and owls and WRA (in Burnaby) is for birds and mammals.
● Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands: Wild ARC (in Victoria) for birds and mammals, and IWNCC (in Saltspring Island) for marine mammals.
● Other places in Canada: Click here to see a list of all the centres in the country.

- Aquariums: If you are interested in marine life, you can volunteer in one of the following aquariums: Aquarium du Quebec (in Quebec), MarineLand (in Niagara Falls), Vancouver Aquarium (in Vancouver) and Ucluelet Aquarium (in Vancouver Island).

- Wildlife parks: They are like zoos for Canadian wildlife only. We recomend the next ones: BC Wildlife Park (in Kamloops, BC), Ecomuseum (in Quebec) and Northern Lights Wolf Centre (Golden, BC).

- Environmental education and flora & fauna monitoring: Parks and environmental education centres in Vancouver and surrounding areas: Stanley Park Ecology Society, Envirothon, Richmond Nature Park, Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre, Burns Bog-Delta Nature Reserve.

- Botanical gardens: Learn about plants while you enjoy pleasant work. We recommend the next ones: VanDusen (Vancouver), Toronto Botanical Gardens and Tofino Botanical Gardens.

- Organic farms and ecovillages: You can learn about organic farming while you live in a nice place in the countryside. We recommend: Providence Farm, OUR Ecovillage and Ecoreality.

- Environmental organizations: Sierra Club Canada, Wilderness Commitee, Burns Bog Conservation Society and David Suzuki Foundation.

- Construction and restoration of mountain trails: FMCBC and Wilderness Committee.
