VOLUNTARY WORK IN INDIA

It is the world's 7th largest & biggest democratic country, and there are more than 1000 regional languages, but Hindi is the national language and English is spoken and understood by most of people. It has a great cultural richness, and this, besides its amazing landscapes, monuments, temples and monasteries, makes India a top tourist destination in the world.

However, India is a country where most of the people suffers from poverty, illnesses and malnutrition. In spite of being one of the countries with highest economical progress nowadays, most of the population is living in misery. Lots of homeless people, orphans, leprous, beggars, etc, are piled in the streets, in front of the impassive look of the people of the highest castes. There are many organisations that work for improving the situation of the most disadvantaged people and volunteers from all over the world go to India to help these organisations.

● Environmental volunteering: The organisations that we propose have projects connected to environment, farming and sustainability .

- Rural Organisation for Social Elevation (ROSE): This organisation carries out ecotourism and farming projects. The volunteer lives with a family in a rural community and does different tasks: field working, tree planting, construction work, office work, etc.

- Viswadarsanam: This organisation of Kerala, a touristic area in the South of India, promote environmental sustainability and simple living through education programs, work shops, nature camps and local campaigns. Volunteers can help in the organic garden, environmental education, office work, etc.

- Auroville: It is an universal township with about 1700 people from 35 nacionalities that live there permanently. There are also volunteers and interns that collaborate in different projects. There are more than a hundred communities and every one has its own projects.

- Gurukula Botanical Sancturary: It is a forest garden in the Western Ghats mountains of Kerala, dedicated to conservation and education. They prefer biology students or something related as volunteers.
