WORK IN A SEA TURTLES CONSERVATION PROJECT IN GREECE

Since 1983 the main objective of Archelon has been the protection of the sea turtles and their habitats in Greece through monitoring and research, development of management plans, public awareness and injured turtles rehabilitation.

Archelon offers volunteering opportunities on the islands of Zakynthos, Crete and Peloponnesus that are the main nesting areas for this species (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranian. For more than twenty years this organisation has been conducting surveys on the mentioned islands. In Athens, the organisation has a rescue centre for the sea turtle rehabilitation.

On the islands the work is seasonal (from may to october) corresponding to the nesting season, while in Athens the work is all year round.

The work on the islands in based around three main activities:
_Monitoring of the nesting areas and habitat protection: This includes a morning survey and a night survey, as well as nest protection, the females and their hatchlings.
_Public Awareness: Education of both tourists and locals about the turtles and the impact of coastal development on the nesting beaches. Volunteers participate in information stations, slides shows in sea turtle biology in hotels and beach patrols.
_Maintenance and day-to-day duties.

At the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Athens arrive turtles usually caught in fishing gear or injured by speedboats and fishermen. Once the turtle has recovered, it is put back into the sea.
The duties of the volunteers include preparation and administration of food, operation of the sea water supply systems, carrying and cleaning the animals, as well as cleaning the facilities and equipment. Volunteers also participate in collection and transport of injured turtles, and public awareness activities.

Applicants must be over 18 years of age, able to communicate in English and carry a health insurance policy. The advised participation period is 6 weeks (minimum participation 28 days). Long term participation is highly appreciated.
Once approved, an applicant will have to pay a non-refundable participation fee of €150. The amount includes administration costs as well as the cost of the annual subscription to the organisation, an exclusive “volunteer” T-shirt and a turtle biology booklet (both received upon arrival). Applicants arriving on or before 15th of May and after 20th of September are entitled to 50% discount (valid for Field Work volunteers only). Volunteers stay on designated free campsites but they have to cover food expenses.

There are research opportunities available for students interested to carry out undergraduate or postgraduate research during their voluntary work. Applications must be made well in advance in order to receive further information and complete a research agreement form. The deadline for finalising research projects is 1st April 2006.
